James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital (JAHVH) was opened in October 1972. Located in beautiful Tampa, FL, JAHVH has expanded to include over 300 hospital beds, eight off-site clinics and two nursing home units across eight counties in central Florida. The number of beds does not begin to describe the size and complexity of the organization. They are a teaching hospital affiliated with several schools, including University of South Florida, offering experience in medical and allied health professions. The hospital is also accredited by the JCAHO, CARF (seven programs), CAP and ANCC for its Magnet Recognition program. Magnet Designation is an international award from the ANCC that identifies health care facilities with exemplary nursing services. Magnet organizations demonstrate greater recruitment and retention of nurses, improved patient outcomes and organizational structures that support positive work environments. This translates into greater nurse satisfaction and professionalism. In 2001, JAHVH became the first veterans' hospital to receive the prestigious ANCC Magnet Designation. As a result JAHVH was the subject of a case study to evaluate the business case associated with this designation. A component of that research effort included a survey of nurses formerly employed at our facility. Telephone cards were included in the mailed surveys as a "thank you" for participation. The response was tremendous with several respondents thanking the survey team for the phone cards. This proved to be an effective measure to boost the survey's response rate. The hospital has continued to grow and mature into an influential force in the community. With state of the art technology and ever-growing academic affiliations, JAHVH is recognized by many for its quality care and innovative processes.
