Custom Phone Cards as a Safety Net

Victims Assistance Services is a not-for-profit agency that serves all innocent victims of crime, who live or work in Westchester County, NY.  They provide victims with: advocacy within the community and legal system, including court accompaniment; counseling, psychotherapy, and support groups.

They also assist with filing Crime Victims Board applications for financial compensations for losses due to a crime. Their 24-hour Rape Crisis Helpline, is staffed with trained volunteers, 365 days of the year. Their hospital advocates respond to sexual assault victims at the emergency rooms of local Westchester hospitals.

They serve child and adult victims of sexual assault, rape & incest, domestic violence, physical assaults, robbery & burglary, homicide, and other crimes. All of their services.

VAS is using custom phone cards as part of their Hope Chest Program.  This program serves clients of the agency, primary victims of domestic violence. The Hope Chest is full of concrete items and services to assist victims with both immediate and long-term safety planning for themselves and their families.  These items allow for victims to plan futures with dignity and self-respect.  VAS has been supplying phone cards to victims for a couple of years and decided to try customizing a card that would disguise important information that could be used safely, without jeopardizing our clients.

VAS has given these custom phone cards to victims of domestic violence who are trying to secure legal assistance or safe places to stay.  They have also given them to victims who are fleeing the area and need them to help set up their lives wherever they are going.  VAS thinks these cards are a vital piece to the Hope Chest and to the agency.
