The Vermont Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are conducting research to help improve the health of mothers and babies. The Vermont PRAMS-the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System-project sends questionnaires to approximately one out of every five Vermont mothers who have given birth each month. Each year in Vermont there are hundreds of babies born with serious health problems. The project's purpose is to find out why some babies are born healthy and others are not by asking a random sample of mothers questions about their behaviors and experiences around the time of their pregnancy. The Vermont Department of Health uses custom phone cards as an incentive to encourage mothers to participate. They include the phone card as a gift when they mail the survey since responding to the Vermont PRAMS questionnaire is voluntary.
