One of the programs Pharm Logic conducted utilized Corporate Phone Cards as both a motivator and educator as described below: The Helping Hearts program was started in June of 2002, at the time of the launch of Altocor (lovastatin) extended-release tablets. The program was designed to accomplish two objectives: to educate patients about cholesterol and heart disease; and to motivate them to stay on Altocor therapy. The main components of Helping Hearts were a series of reminder letters sent to patients who signed up for the program. These letters asked patients to remember to go the pharmacy and fill their Altocor prescriptions each month. The letters also included information about cholesterol and the role of diet and exercise in preventing heart disease. One of the letters included a free custom phone card good for 30 minutes of calling time. When patients used the card, they received a reminder, educational message regarding the role of cholesterol as it pertains to their health status, and the importance of refilling their prescriptions. This reinforced the overall message of the program. Approximately 25% of the custom phone cards produced for the program were redeemed by patients, which is considered to be an excellent redemption rate and one measure of the success of the Helping Hearts Program.
