Their parent company, The Nuance Group AG, is based in Zurich, Switzerland. The Nuance Group started its history as a company called Ocean Trading in 1917, as a “travel retailer” on-board cruise ships. In 1955, the first “duty-free” sales were established on board Swissair. In 1961, the first tax-free shop was opened in the Zurich Airport.

In 1992, Nuance was born through a merger of two Swiss based airline duty free sales operations (Swissair and Crossair). In 1995, “Downtown Duty Free” and “City International Duty Free” were acquired in Australia. A year later, Allders International (UK based) and Island Companies (Cayman Islands) were also acquired to help Nuance become the world’s largest airport retailer.

Today, Nuance has duty-free and duty-paid shops in airports, on ferries and in downtown locations. They also handle in-flight sales for a number of airlines in addition to mail order and e-shopping facilities. Their aim is to be wherever the traveler goes, with the best the world has to offer.
