The North Region Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Care Council (North Region EMS - www.northregionems.com) continues to inform the community that Trauma is the number one killer of Americans between the ages of one and forty-four. We believe that trauma deaths are avoidable. Nationally, for every one thousand dollars spent to care for injury, less than two dollars is spent on injury prevention and research. Statistics have shown that trauma deaths are greatly reduced when an organized trauma system is in place. A successful trauma system is more than a vision and commitment from EMS agencies and health care facilities acting as a trauma service, it's a commitment from all of us. Since 1990 , Washington State has developed one of the more comprehensive statewide EMS and trauma systems in the country. The development of this system shows Washington State's commitment to addressing EMS and trauma issues. The State feels that it is in the best interest of the public to establish an efficient and well-coordinated statewide EMS and trauma care system. North Region EMS endorses this commitment and provides the following mission statement to help guide and reinforce its work: The mission of North Region EMS is to promote a coordinated region-wide system. The System shall provide quality, comprehensive, and cost-effective emergency medical and trauma care to individuals in Island, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, and Whatcom Counties. The Washington Department of Health, Center for Health Statistics for 1998-2002 names motor vehicle crashes as the number one cause of fatalities in the North Region. More specifically, according to the Fatal Analysis Reporting System , approximately 45% of traffic deaths in the North Region are alcohol related. In order to combat these statistics, North Region EMS purchased and distributed the DUI Phone Cards through a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and the Washington State Department of Health Office of EMS and Trauma System. More than 3,500 phone cards were distributed throughout the five counties in the North Region. The cards will be distributed through a variety of educational programs and opportunities, including:
The purpose of the custom promotional phone cards is twofold: 1) to increase awareness of the perils of impaired driving and 2) to provide a resource for people who find themselves in an unsafe situation and need to call for a safe ride home. Agencies receiving the phone cards will be required to submit a Final Report, detailing the program in which the phone cards were distributed. This will provide NREMS with insight into how well the cards were received and whether they will be effective. Data trends will also be analyzed to determine efficacy of the phone cards and whether their distribution actually decreased the instances of impaired driving in the region.
