The Northern Nebraska Area Health Education Center (NNAHEC) is a non-profit organization working to improve the health of Nebraskans in a 26 county area. It is the mission of NNAHEC to promote, recruit and retain health care professionals through partnerships among healthcare, educational and community providers. Growing our Own Health Professions is the slogan for NNAHEC. Northern Nebraska AHEC is using custom phone cards as a part of their health professional student services. Students in health professions train programs do community based training in hospitals and clinics as part of their overall training program. These training locations can be in remote rural areas in Nebraska where current cell phone reception is not always an option. As funds are often limited for the students, long distance phone calls to family and friends may have to be kept at a minimum. NNAHEC strives to assist students to make their community based trainings go smoothly. Taking any additional obstacles away from the students so they are able to concentrate on becoming good health care providers is one way to assist with this. Providing the phone cards can help the students stay in touch with friends and family when in an unfamiliar community in rural Nebraska.
