In June 2006, IHEC decided to provide “Care Packages” to all institutions of higher education in Illinois. Since prevention budgets are tight for colleges, IHEC staff thought it would be a good idea to send some prevention goodies their way, to use at special events like Freshman Orientation or Alcohol Awareness Week. Included in these packages were pens, brochures, and phone cards displaying a drinking and driving prevention message. Nearly 15,000 phone cards were distributed to college students in the state of Illinois. The college contacts were very appreciative of the care packages, especially the phone cards. They liked the design and function of the cards so well, many asked for a bigger supply. This was a very successful project for IHEC and they may consider distributing more phone cards in the following years.
