Calling Cards help Cancer Patient Families ease the Burden of their Pain

Gabe’s My Heart, Inc. (www.gabesmyheart.com) was born out of one family’s experience. In December 2002, Lu Sipos and her husband Rob found out their infant son, Gabe, had been diagnosed with cancer. While the Sipos family struggled to find their place in their new world, Gabe struggled to grasp what was happening to him.

In an effort to help him understand his treatment, Lu took a stuffed yellow duck left by a friend and gave it an extreme makeover. She dressed it in blue hospital pajamas and tied a bandana around its head. She also added a chemotherapy port on its chest and a blood pressure cuff. Gabe was transformed into Dr. Gabe, and “Chemo Duck” was born.

Lu quickly realized that there was a need for educational toys and books to help children who were struggling through cancer treatment. Gabe’s My Heart, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing education and comfort to children undergoing cancer treatment through play therapy using therapeutic tools. The organization was incorporated in August of 2004 and has since been listed as a Tennessee Not For Profit Corporation. As of January 2005, Gabe’s My Heart, Inc. received exemption status as a 501C3 not for-profit business.

Gabe’s My Heart, Inc. consists of a team of dedicated business professionals, cancer survivors, family members of cancer survivors, and health care professionals. Collectively they bring expertise in the following areas: Pediatric Oncology, Nursing, Child Life, Social Work, Psychology, Distribution & Manufacturing, and Business Practices. All positions are non-salaried voluntary roles and all donations go directly to the implementation of Chemo Duck and our other programs; programs such as the survival kits provided to newly diagnosed families at Monroe Carell JR. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, every aspect of family life changes in an instant. Everyone needs to adjust to a new lifestyle, a new medical language, and often a prolonged hospital stay. The items in the gift bag are designed to help ease the family into their new life, lift a little of the financial burden of the initial hospital stay, and provide a few necessary items that families may not have time to purchase.
