In 1979, a handful of devoted Christians recognized an opportunity to minister to Arizona seniors (particularly those with little financial resources) by offering affordable nursing care. They formed a non-profit organization and called it Christian Care. In 1980 money was donated and scraped together and the cornerstone was laid for a sixty-bed Nursing Center and inscribed with Psalm 71:9: Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth. Today, Christian Care Companies (www.christiancare.org) includes twenty-one non-profit corporations that have enabled the number of residents being served to grow from the original 60 Nursing Center residents to more than 2,100 residents making their home on one of five campuses across the state. Christian Care is the largest provider of affordable housing in Arizona and their spiritual foundation continues to be a significant characteristic in their day-to-day operation - as their communities focus on providing “quality and responsive senior housing, hospitality and healthcare services to seniors.” Christian Care communities strive to nurture a V.I.P. lifestyle for each resident. Retain Vitality Encourage Involvement Provide Purpose This V.I.P. lifestyle is available in Independent and Assisted living campuses in Phoenix, Mesa, Tucson and Cottonwood, along with the Nursing Center in Phoenix. We have received very good feedback on our 30-minute phone cards as they are being used for three purposes. 1) They were given as a Mother’s Day gift to our resident’s families - many live out of town or state - to encourage them to call Mom; 2) they are used as incentives and promotions for prospective residents; 3) they are used as thank you gifts for donors.
